When sound becomes light: The artistry of Visual System

Cassidy Parker

Updated: Oct 28, 2024

In the lead-up to an event, our sound engineers tend to work during the day, rigging, tuning and fine-tuning our spatial audio system to perfection. But as the night comes, another team appears, their shift only just beginning. The French art collective Visual System has been responsible for designing several iconic Polygon domes over the years, and for synchronising the lighting in these structures to every beat. They largely work in the dark: it’s the only way to see their artistry.

Visual System have designed a number of Polygon domes at Wonderfruit, including 2019’s conical centre, 2022’s mesmerising hexagons and 2023’s concentric vortex. Added to this are the numerous temporary, long-term and permanent installations the team has created for events and spaces across Europe. On 18 and 19 October 2024, they’ll be bringing their magic touch to Full Cycle, a spatial audio concert series hosted by Polygon and The Other Side at the Amsterdam Dance Event.

Wondering what you can expect visually? It’s probably best to let Visual System’s work speak for itself.

Of course, these pictures only capture a moment in time. Visual System’s full force is really felt when you’re standing beneath one of their creations, and watching the light as it shifts, pulses and swirls in time to the music.
